A Matter of Size
Poor Herzl, a 340 pound chef living with his mother tries to find his way through various fitness regimes, as it does for his three buddies in the working-class town of Ramle. This endearing and poignant comedy finds wit and sould in its four guys’ efforts to master sumo wrestling….and accept themselves as they are. With echoes of The Full Monty (and 3 Israeli Academy Awards), A Matter of Size follows its own tender and funny path from body shame to celebration….and from loneliness to love!

Fill the Void (PG)
This is the remarkable 2012 feature debut by the first Orthodox woman to make a film for the mainstream and was Israel’s Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language film. The story focuses on Shira, who is about to be married off to a young man when her sister suddenly dies in childbirth, leaving behind a husand and newborn. The film advances an insider’s view of Orthodox life in Tel Aviv and and offers portrayals that counteract many stereotypes….and of these women who call the shots.
